10 May 2022: Electrification of offshore oil and production
This session on electrification of offshore oil and gas production in the UK brought together a fantastic set of speakers representing three separate offshore electrification projects.
Arjit Gupta from Shell representing the Central North Sea electrification project (CNSe) described how Shell, BP, Harbour and Total are collaborating on integrated approaches with the objective of delivering affordable low carbon electrical power to their assets by 2030. Joel Maisey from Crondall representing the Orcadian Microgrid gave a fascinating analysis of how reliable low carbon power could be delivered to clusters of oil and gas facilities utilising distribution hubs. Presentation link.Bridgit Hartland-Johnson from Orsted, Mungo McLeish from Neptune Energy, and Amelia Swanney from Goal 7, jointly presented Project Neos. This project takes a holistic look at the synergies between offshore wind and electrification of oil and gas and – as well as considering the technical and economic feasibility – considers the regulatory regime and consenting pathways. Some key take outs:
- Collaboration is crucial: all projects were formed from multiple companies; all are learning from each other.
- There are mutual benefits of wind farm developments working in conjunction with oil and gas electrification projects in terms of: shared costs and risks of power cables; new route to market for OFW electricity; and legacy infrastructure.
- All projects have addressed the issue of intermittency of the power supply and aim to minimise brownfield modification requirements.
- Electrification projects appear to be technically feasible and seem key to delivering the oil and gas industry’s decarbonisation objectives.
- Criteria other than NPV may be required to justify sanction of projects – business support from government may be needed alongside innovative funding and contracting agreements
